INDIANAPOLIS — The total solar eclipse has ended, but the roads in and around Indianapolis are still feeling the effect as thousands upon thousands of visitors head home causing traffic gridlocks and logjams.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is advising drivers to be patient and expect delays.

Delays continued on Tuesday morning especially on I-65 northbound near Lebanon and Lafayette as drivers head toward Chicago.

On Monday, following the eclipse, traffic congestion maps showed Interstate 65 northbound toward Chicago in dark red for nearly the entire stretch between Indianapolis and Lafayette.

Commuters heading for Illinois via I-74 didn’t have much better luck on Monday as that interstate was also packed heavy with traffic.

Those planning on flying out of Indianapolis can also expect a busy airport to be waiting as Indianapolis became one of the best spots in the United States to view this rare and magical phenomenon.
