BEDFORD HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - A dog has died after a vehicle crashed into an animal day care in Ohio on Easter.

According to authorities, the crash occurred at 3 a.m. Sunday when a car hit a pole, drove off Interstate 480, and crashed into Camp Bow Wow Bedford Heights.

Bedford firefighters said the vehicle involved also caught fire after the collision.

The driver and a woman in the car were not injured, but a dog named Griffin was killed.

“We are devastated, and our hearts are broken to announce the loss of one beloved Camper, Griffin,” a representative with the doggy day care shared. “All other dogs were evaluated by a veterinarian and received any necessary care.”

Police added the crash remains under investigation, but the driver was not intoxicated.

Authorities said there was no guardrail along that section of I-480 and they have previously expressed their concerns to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

“We do advocate for guardrails to be located on the freeway in our city. We would prefer that they be there,” said Bedford Heights Assistant Police Chief Kenneth Hatcher Jr.

Police did not immediately identify the driver or the woman in the vehicle.

Camp Bow Wow management said the other animals at the facility have since been transferred to a nearby day care or have been picked up by their owners.

The Bedford Heights location is expected to be closed for several weeks.
