Who should be the Happy State Bank Male and Female High School Athletes of the Week?

The biggest track meets of the season are under way while baseball and softball are in the heart of district play with several top performers from each nominated for the Happy State Bank male and female high school athlete of the week.

The Globe-News is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Happy State Bank male and female Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced thereafter.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. each Monday and can be submitted through email at sports@amarillo.com.

Please include statistics from the week's games and any pertinent information or honors.

Male Finalists

• Ethan Bentley, West Plains baseball — Bentley was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI and also tossed a five-inning, five-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in an 11-0 win against Canyon.

• Will Flaming, Amarillo High baseball — Flaming was 4 for 4 with three RBIs a triple and a home run in the Sandies win against Palo Duro.

• Jack Lankford, Randall boys golf — Lankford was the District 4-4A medalist champion after shooting 69-72—141 to help the Raiders win the team title at Ross Rogers Golf Complex.

• Fernando Lira, Caprock boys soccer — Lira netted the Longhorns goal in a regional quarterfinal contest against El Paso Burges.

• Michael McCloy, Gruver boys track — McCloy won five of his events at the District 1-2A meet, winning the pole vault (16-0), long jump (20-10), 110 hurdles (15.3), 300 hurdles (41.12) and anchored his team to the 1,600-meter relay title.

• Preston Neumeier, Canadian boys track — Neumeier won the 300 hurdles (39.41), the long jump (23-9.25) and the triple jump (46-3.5) at the District 1-3A meet.

Female Finalists

• Lilly Cook, Amarillo High girls soccer — Cook had two goals and one assist in a regional quarterfinal win against Abilene Wylie.

• Star Cortes, Dumas softball — Cortes hit two home runs and tallied four RBIs and threw a four-hitter to earn the victory in the circle against Randall.

• Kynleigh Kirby, Pampa softball — Kirby hit home runs in five consecutive at-bats in games against Randall and Hereford, including 11 RBIs, while also earning two wins in the circle with eight strikeouts and three walks.

• McKinzi McManus, Kelton girls track — The freshman won the 100, 200, long jump and helped the 400 relay to a second-place finish along with a bronze medal in the triple jump at the District 1-1A meet.

• Hannah Stuart, Canyon girls track — Stuart won the 1,600 (4:59.82) and the 3,200 (11:00.78) at the District 4-4A track meet.

• Kaetlin Sundvahl, Dalhart girls track — Sundvahl, a freshman, qualified for the area meet in five events, including winning gold in the 100 hurdles (16.04) and long jump (17-10) at the District 1-3A meet. She finished second in the triple jump and won bronze in the 400- and 800-meter relay.
