To determine the best car insurance companies in Illinois, CNBC Select analyzed dozens of U.S. insurance companies offering car insurance coverage in the state and compared them based on various factors including cost and customer service.

While narrowing down the best auto insurance companies in Illinois, we focused on an average sample premium for full coverage auto insurance policies in the state from Bankrate. Full coverage premiums were based on:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $500 deductibles

We also gathered data from J.D. Power's Overall Customer Satisfaction Index Ranking, A.M. Best, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' complaint index scores. We also considered the number of discounts available from each company and any other standout features.
