Kentucky Republican candidate arrested on strangulation charge

A Kentucky state representative candidate was arrested Monday night after allegedly strangling a teen who almost hit his son with a ball, according to a police report.

Brian Ormes, 53, is facing a felony first-degree strangulation charge and misdemeanors for menacing and fourth-degree assault.

The Southgate resident is running for office in District 67 in Campbell County. That includes Newport, Bellevue, Dayton, Wilder, Highland Heights and other areas in the northwest area of the county.

The House seat is open after Rachel Roberts, one of the few Democrats in the General Assembly, announced she will not run for reelection this year.

Ormes is facing fellow Republican Terry Hatton in the primary next month. The winner will go up against Democrat Matt Lehman in the general election this fall.

The allegations against Ormes

According to a Fort Wright police report, three minors were playing with a ball by the bike aisle at the Valley Plaza Walmart. The ball almost hit Ormes’ son and the minors told police Ormes became angry and started following them around the store.

A police officer said in the report he saw security video footage of Ormes confronting a 17-year-old and pushing him in the back of the head. Ormes then allegedly pushed the teen against a shelf and put his hand around the teen’s neck.

Ormes was released from the Kenton County Detention Center on a $2,500 cash bond Tuesday. He is scheduled to be back in court April 16.

He has not responded to a phone call or Facebook message request for comment.
