Three construction workers were killed in a car wreck early Wednesday morning while repairing a Pennsylvania highway.
Pennsylvania State Police said Reed Davenport, 24, was driving a large box truck on I-83 in Fairview Township when he collided with a construction vehicle in a work zone, the York Daily Record reported.
Davenport’s truck then continued into the construction zone, killing three people, cops said.
The victims have not yet been publicly identified, and authorities have not announced any charges against Davenport.
The wreck occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-83, about 8 miles south of the state capital of Harrisburg. The interstate was shut down for hours but reopened by the afternoon, according to 511PA.
Construction crews began work Monday on the highway, repairing cracks in the roadway, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said. The planned work, which was announced last week, was occurring from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly with rolling lane closures.
“Right now, we’re just gathering information,” PennDOT spokesman Dave Thompson said. “We’re obviously very shaken by this event.”
The victims of the crash were employed by a PennDOT contractor, Thompson added.
The crash came during National Work Zone Awareness Week, which Pennsylvania State Police marked Tuesday with a Facebook post.
State police commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris “joined state officials to remind drivers to do their part to keep roadway workers safe: slow down, eliminate distractions, and never drive under the influence,” the post read.
The York County Coroner’s Office, Pennsylvania State Police and a collision analysis and reconstruction unit also responded to the scene, according to the Daily Record.
