FERGUSON, Mo. – St. Louis County Police are investigating after a Ferguson police officer was caught in a gas station shooting that left two people dead.

The incident occurred at the QuikTrip on W. Florissant Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. According to officials, the Ferguson officer was leaving the establishment when he heard gunshots coming from near the gas pumps.

It was discovered that one man was shooting at another, leading to the officer opening fire as well.

Both suspects have died, according to Sgt. Tracy Panus. One collapsed on W. Florissant and the other was pronounced dead at the gas pump.

Police say the two adult males arrived at the gas station in the same vehicle. A handgun was found at the scene.

“Any loss of life is always a problem, and we definitely don’t want to minimize that, but, yes, this could’ve been worse,” Sgt. Panus said.

The officer was not injured in the incident.

“The officer walking out of the gas station…he went directly towards (the gunfire). He didn’t look around, he didn’t try to get away from the situation, he went to try and figure out what was going on and try to put an end to whatever kind of violence was happening,” Sgt. Panus said.
