N.J. man who threatened police over traffic tickets surrenders after standoff, cops say

A Bergen County man who received motor vehicle summonses on Saturday made numerous voicemail threats to police and then engaged in a standoff with SWAT team members who tried to arrest him at his home, according to police.

After receiving the tickets, the man called the Dumont Municipal Court and left nine voicemails “threatening to do harm to former and current members” of the police department, Chief Brian Joyce said in a statement.

When officers tried to arrest the man at his home, he refused to come out, police said. Officers assisted by members of the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team and Cresskill police surrounded the man’s home.

“After a brief standoff, (the man) agreed to surrender and exited his residence without incident, where he was placed into custody,” Joyce said.

The man was taken to Bergen New Bridge Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.

He was later charged with one count of third-degree terroristic threats and taken Monday to the Bergen County Jail ahead of a court hearing, records show.
