AND TONIGHT, HE’S BEEN IDENTIFIED AS LIEUTENANT RODNEY OSBORNE OF THE SOUTHERN OHIO CORRECTIONAL FACILITY IN LUCASVILLE AND WLWT NEWS FIVE’S KARIN JOHNSON JOINS US HERE WITH WHAT HAPPENED. HI, THERE. HEY, MIKE. SHEREE, INVESTIGATORS ARE SAYING VERY LITTLE ABOUT WHAT LED UP TO THE SHOOTING, BUT THEY DID SAY THIS APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A TRAGIC ACCIDENT. TODAY’S A TRAGIC DAY. THE CALL CAME IN JUST BEFORE 1130 THIS MORNING AT 402, ENGINE 401 CORRECTIONS TRAINING ACADEMY WELLNESS 50, WITH A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE CHEST. EMERGENCY CREWS DISPATCHED TO THE CORRECTIONAL TRAINING ACADEMY IN PICKAWAY COUNTY. PATROL WAS NOTIFIED OF AN INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED AT THE TACTICAL FIRING RANGE LOCATED HERE AT THE CORRECTIONAL TRAINING ACADEMY. UM, THAT RESULTED IN THE ON DUTY DEATH OF LIEUTENANT RODNEY OSBORNE. INVESTIGATORS NOT SAYING HOW HE WAS SHOT OR ANY OTHER DETAILS SURROUNDING THE SHOOTING. THIS APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A TRAGIC ACCIDENT IN THE OHIO STATE HIGHWAY PATROL IS INVESTIGATING TONIGHT ON SOCIAL MEDIA. HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES FROM POLICE AGENCIES AROUND THE STATE, AS THOSE IN THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY AFFECTIONATELY REFER TO OSBORNE AS LIEUTENANT OZZIE OSBORNE WAS A 13 YEAR EMPLOYEE OF THE SOUTHERN OHIO CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, AND COLLEAGUES SAY HE WAS RESPECTED BECAUSE OF HIS CHARACTER, DRIVE AND SUPPORT HE GAVE TO OTHERS WAS ON THEIR HONOR GUARD. THEIR SRT, A MEMBER OF OUR STAR TEAM. AND JUST LAST WEEK, LIEUTENANT RODNEY OSBORNE WAS NAMED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR BY THE PRISON. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has ordered flags at Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction facilities across the state to be flown at half-staff after the death of a corrections officer.On Tuesday, Correction Lieutenant Rodney Osborne, from the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, was shot and killed during a training exercise at the Corrections Training Academy in Pickaway County, near Columbus."We ask that you keep Lt. Osborne's wife, children, loved ones, and team members in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," a statement from the ODRC said Tuesday.Osborne was an employee at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility for 13 years, officials say.The governor's order lasts until sunset the day of Osborne's funeral.
