LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) - Firefighters extinguished a blaze that threatened a Lee’s Summit home after a discarded cigarette sparked a small inferno in the mulch.

The Lee’s Summit Fire Department says that around 2:20 p.m. on Friday, March 29, emergency crews were called to the 1200 block of SW Arbor Park Dr. with reports of a fire.

The resident reported they heard two loud “bangs” outside and when they went to see what happened, found a fire on the side of the house near the gas meter.

When firefighters arrived, they said they found a fire bursting from the back of the single-story, single-family home. All occupants of the residence were able to safely evacuate.

Crews said they quickly brought the fire under control as crews entered the building to check for any flames inside. The fire did impinge the gas meter and caused it to fail which provided fuel to the blaze.

Firefighters indicated that the fire did extend through the basement window and to part of the wood frame around the window. They were able to extinguish the flames and monitored the gas leak until Spire could stop the small gas flow from the damaged pipe.

By just after 2:30 p.m., the incident was under control. The fire did damage the siding of the house and around a basement window. There was minimal smoke damage inside the home.

Investigators noted that the blaze was sparked by wind-blown ash from a discarded cigarette.
