UPDATED: Police seek help locating man missing in Bloomington

This story has been updated with details from police.

About 2 p.m. Friday, a Bloomington police officer found Arthur Heckman, safe and well.

The 79-year-old, missing since 12:30 a.m. Friday, was located near the intersection of East Covenanter Drive and South College Mall Road, about three miles from where he was reported missing.

He was cold and wet, BPD Capt. Ryan Pedigo said, "so officers transported him to a local hospital for an evaluation to ensure he did not suffer any medical issues as a result of being out in the weather for so long."

Early Friday afternoon, the Bloomington Police Department issued a bulletin seeking help from the public in locating a man with dementia who was missing.

Heckman was last seen about 12:30 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of West Third Street, according to the bulletin.

His description − white, with brown eyes, gray hair and a full beard, 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a brown tweed flat cap, navy blue long underwear, a gray zip-up sweatshirt and slippers.

He had left his residence on foot and may have gone either east or northwest, police said, and may have been confused and moving slowly.

"If anyone sees him, we ask that they please call 911 as soon as possible so we can send officers to get him safely back home," Pedigo said before Heckman was found.
