A "heartbreaking" story of a dog that was allegedly shot this past weekend and then left for dead along a rural, Clearfield County road.

Officials say the dog is now doing better but is facing major surgery.

Dennyboy is an Australian Shepard that is now being cared for at the Metzger Animal Hospital.

“This type of abuse, fortunately, is rare. Unfortunately, when it happens, it’s quite severe. There are a lot of feelings when these cases are in the hospital.”

It was last weekend when Dennyboy, and another dog, which has since died, were found along a roadside near Irvona.

The rescue group Animals Matter of Clearfield County acted quickly to rescue Dennyboy, who was barely alive, and transport him to Metzger’s on Sunday.

“It’s suspected that he suffered a gunshot wound after we noticed a metal-looking object on the X-ray, along with a severe fracture near his shoulder.”

Staff says Dennyboy is now eating and doing better, while awaiting surgery.

“He is scheduled to have his front limb amputated tomorrow. The rest of his injuries were mild. So, he should have a pretty normal life, even though he will only have three legs.”

Animals Matter of Clearfield County not only looking for a foster home for Dennyboy, but also raising money to pay his medical bills.
