A careless driver who caused a three-car pileup after ploughing into the back of a stationary learner has been barred from driving.

Ian Halliday, 45, was driving a Scania lorry on Speke Boulevard, Liverpool, when he approached a line of vehicles stuck in a traffic jam.

Dashcam footage showed him failing to slow down before smashing into the back of a car at around 9.35am on December 4, 2023.

The learner’s back windows were completely shattered as their car hurtled forward and crashed into other vehicles.

Footage showed a blue Peugeot van careening around another car as a damaged silver car was flung onto a grassy embankment.

One driver had to be rescued by firefighters cutting the roof of their car open. Another, an Audi driver, was taken to hospital after suffering injuries.

Several other motorists were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Halliday, 45, was arrested after the crash and charged with causing considerable injury by careless driving.

Police said that amid the wet driving conditions, Halliday hadn’t ‘noticed’ the stationary cars in front of him.

Merseyside Roads Policing Unit said: ‘This dashcam footage shows a serious injury RTC from December last year.

‘The driver of this HGV didn’t notice stationary traffic and collided into it.

‘Driver has been sentenced at court and handed a suspended prison sentence, disqualification and must retake test.’

Halliday was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison on Thursday after submitting an initial guilty plea at Magistrates court.

His sentence was suspended for 12 months and he has been ordered to complete 15 days of rehabilitation activity.

He has been barred from driving for 12 months but will be allowed back on the roads after he has taken a retest.
