BUFFALO, N.Y. — Erie County District Attorney John Flynn is ready to leave office after serving a self-imposed limit of two terms.

“I think that eight years is enough, quite frankly, for any politician,” Flynn said.

What You Need To Know

  •  Flynn served seven years as Erie County district attorney

  •  His office has adapted to a number of changes to law that have impacted prosecutions

  • First Deputy District Attorney Michael Keane will take Flynn’s place at the end of the month

During his tenure, his office adapted to New York State law changes including Raise the Age, discovery reform, the legalization of marijuana, Clean Slate laws and bail reform.

“Those changes obviously forced us to change our business model and change the way that we do business in this office to a certain extent,” Flynn said.

He said his office was able to alleviate overcrowding at the Erie County Holding Center by not requesting bail for misdemeanors even before bail reform took effect.

He will be joining Lippes Mathias LLP and continue serving as the president of the District Attorneys Association of New York.
