How much rain has Sacramento seen this month? We got half of our average this past weekend alone
We are only halfway through the month of April, but it has already been a good month of rain for Northern California.
As pleasant as sunny skies can be, it is still important that the state receives enough rain and snow to keep a healthy water supply.
Meteorologist Tamara Berg said the average amount of rainfall the Sacramento area typically gets in the month of April is 1.44 inches — we have already surpassed that.
So far, 1.68 inches of rain has fallen in the Sacramento area this month. From this past weekend alone, three-quarters of an inch fell.
This comes as the latest snow survey revealed that the state's snowpack has caught up to the average after a dismal start to the snow season.
At the Phillips area of El Dorado County, the survey found slightly more than five feet of snow depth and a snow water equivalent of 27.5 inches, which is 113% of the average of the location. That's according to the Department of Water Resources.
The April 1 survey is considered the most important as it's typically the peak of the seasonal snowpack.
On Jan. 1, the statewide Sierra snowpack stood at only 28% of the average, according to DWR readings. But during the April survey, the snowpack statewide measured at 110% of the average. Every region in the Sierra, the North, Central and South areas, all measured above normal for this date.
