BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Protestors from Citizen Action New York and Indivisible Binghamton stood out by the Metro Center on Court Street on Monday afternoon to protest what they said is Congressman Marc Molinaro’s unwillingness to tax the rich.

Community Organizer for Citizen Action New York Ravo Root said corporations do not pay their fair share in taxes and alleged Molinaro enables this inequality.

“The one percent holds $44.6 trillion in wealth and much of that is actually untaxed,” Root said. “So, there’s many corporations that don’t pay nearly anything in taxes.”

Indivisible Binghamton co-chair Linda Quilty argued taxes on the wealthy should be increased and that money should go to services such as childcare, healthcare, social security, veteran services, and more.

“If we take some money from the upper class, the rich, it won’t even dent what they have,” Quilty said. “We put that money into the government, we can do services to help these lower classes that are barely getting by.”

“[Molinaro] continues to say, ‘Hey I’m for working-class people, I’m for the middle class, I grew up on food stamps,’ then he’ll vote to cut food stamps,” Root said. “He’ll vote to cut veterans services, and he continues to do that throughout instead of taxing the wealthy and the one percent.”

In a statement provided to 12 News on Monday, Molinaro’s office said, “Marc Molinaro grew up poor and just voted to expand the Child Tax Credit – putting more money in parents’ pockets” in response to the downtown demonstration.
