“If you build it, they will come” is one of the famous lines in the 1989 classic movie “Field of Dreams.”

Monday night, the Charleston city council approved the city’s 11th turf multi-use athletic fields of future dreams.

Nearly all council members approved the $1.2 million project to be built at the North Charleston Community Center.  The field will be used for football, baseball and soccer.

Councilman Pat Jones also promoted the new field’s ability to bring the community together.

“I am thrilled about the addition of this new multi-use field at the North Charleston Community Center – especially for our young people,” said Jones. “Not only will this field provide a space to play football, baseball and soccer it will also serve as a hub for social interactions and community gatherings – enriching the overall quality of life in our community.”

Councilman Larry Moore believes the investment will attract more people to northern part of the city.

“This is going to be a game changer because what it is right now an entity wouldn’t let our kids in because they said they didn’t want to play at north Charleston field, they had all kinds of excuses, they would say oh north Charleston is this, so now we’re going to have a field better than what they play at now,” said Moore.

Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin touted the project as an additional way to promote sports tourism in the capitol city.

“We are incredibly grateful for the outreach and support from our community and eagerly await the first games on this new field,” said Shuler Goodwin.

Work on the multi-use field is expected to begin in late spring or early summer.
This project will be funded with a $250 thousand federal grant. The other portion – $950 thousand – comes from the city’s fiscal year 2024 budget.

The city has invested 10-million dollars for the 11-turf field multi-use fields it now oversees.
