UVA’s Dunn declares for NBA draft

University of Virginia guard Ryan Dunn has declared for the 2024 NBA draft, he announced on social media.

Dunn, a 6-8 sophomore from Freeport, New York, is considered a potential first-round pick by ESPN and is ranked No. 31 among its NBA draft prospects.

He averaged 8.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.3 steals in 27 minutes per game, and was recognized as one of the best defenders in college basketball this past season. He has a 7-foot-2 wingspan.

Dunn finished second in voting to teammate Reece Beekman for ACC Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-ACC honorable mention.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

VWU upsets No. 24 N.C. Wesleyan

Nick Sylvester hit a two-run double to cap a six-run eighth inning and finished with three RBIs as Virginia Wesleyan knocked off No. 24 North Carolina Wesleyan 11-9 on Tuesday in Virginia Beach.

Connor Mock (1-0) picked up the victory for the Marlins (19-12) with two-thirds of a scoreless inning of relief.

Christopher Newport 18, Eastern Mennonite 3: Lincoln Lubsen hit a grand slam and scored three runs and Doc Daniels had two hits and three RBIs as No. 13 Christopher Newport rolled in a game shortened to seven innings Tuesday in Harrisonburg.

Starting pitcher Marcus Dux (1-0) tossed three scoreless innings to earn the victory for the Captains (21-7).

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

VWU sweeps pair from Bridgewater

Emma Adams and Julia Piotrowski combined on a two-hitter in the first game and Adams tossed a five-hitter in the second game as No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan swept a doubleheader at Bridgewater College 8-0 and 2-1 on Tuesday.

Joslyn Woodard hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning for the go-ahead run for the Marlins (22-7) in the second game.

  • Virginia Tech second baseman Cameron Fagan has been named the ACC Softball Player of the Week. She hit .667 with seven RBIs in a three-game series against Boston College.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF

ODU’s Gonzalez 3rd at SBC tourney

Old Dominion’s Lucia Gonzalez shot a 1-over-par 73 to move into a tie for third place individually and the Monarchs remained in fourth place in the team competition after the second day of the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Tuesday at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear, Alabama.

Gonzalez rose nine spots and is at 1-over 145, two shots behind leader Daniela Campillo of Louisiana Monroe. The Monarchs’ Carley Rudolf is tied for 15th at 4 over after shooting a 73 on Tuesday.

ODU is at 15 over as a team, following its 290 first-day score with a 301. It is two shots behind Georgia Southern. Texas State leads at 5 over and is six shots ahead of Louisiana Monroe.

James Madison is in 10th place, and the Dukes’ Amelia Williams is tied for third individually at 1 over.

Wednesday is the final round of stroke play, and the top four teams will advance to match play on Thursday.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

NSU’s Mullins earns academic honor

Norfolk State forward Paris Mullins has been named to the Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Communicators.

The team recognizes student-athletes for their combined performances in the classroom and on the court.

COLLEGE TENNIS

ODU men collect 6 SBC awards

The Old Dominion men’s tennis team picked up six Sun Belt Conference awards on Tuesday.

Connor van Schalkwyk has been named the league’s Freshman of the Year, and he joined teammate Cosme Rolland de Ravel on the singles all-conference first team. He also joined his brother, Codie van Schalkwyk, on the doubles first team.

ODU’s Rolland de Ravel and Jakob Cadonau made the doubles first team as well and Yanis Moundir made the singles second team.

  • William & Mary women’s tennis player Mila Mejic has been named the CAA Player of the Week. She won in straight sets at the No. 3 spot in victories over Elon and Campbell.
