Cache County GOP delegates to meet state, federal candidates on April 17

CACHE COUNTY – The Cache County Republican Party will host a meet and greet event with GOP candidates for state and federal offices on Wednesday, April 17.

With Cache County’s own GOP Nominating Convention over, the attention of local Republican officials are turning to preparations for their party’s upcoming statewide convention.

That convention will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, with Republican delegates representing all 29 of Utah’s counties.

The order of the day, according to Cache County GOP chair Geoff Cox, will be to select general election nominees for the U.S. Senate, for the U.S. House; for Utah’s governor and lieutenant governor; for various other state offices including attorney general, state auditor and state treasurer; and candidates for state lawmakers and the state school board who represent multiple counties.

The convention agenda will also include the selections of Utah delegates to the Republican National Convention in July and presidential electors to represent Utah in the Electoral College, as well as approving the Utah Republican Party platform and a slate of party bylaws.

To facilitate Cache County delegates learning as much as possible about the candidates running for state and federal offices, those delegates are invited to a local “Meet the Candidates” Night on April 17 at the Cache County Event Center.

Goeff Cox says that the county’s delegates to the state convention are invited to this exclusive gathering starting at 6:30 p.m.

Among the candidates seeking to replace Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) in Washington who have signaled that they plan to attend the Cache County event are Brent Orrin Hatch, Brad Wilson, Jason Walton, Carolyn Phippen, John Curtis and Trent Staggs.

In the race for Utah’s 1^st District seat in Congress, candidate Paul Miller will attend the county event. Incumbent Blake Moore will be represented by members of his campaign staff.

T. Carson Jorgensen will top the list of gubernatorial candidates attending. Spencer Cox, who is on a state visit to Canada starting on April 16, will be represented by members of his campaign staff.

It should be noted, however, that Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson is scheduled to visit the Cache County Clerk/Auditors Office at 2 p.m. on that day and could possibly remain here to represent Spencer Cox at the county’s candidate event.

Candidates in the running for attorney general who will be on hand are Rachel Terry and Frank Mylar.

Vying for the office of State Auditor, candidates Tina Cannon and Ricky Hatch will also attend the event.

Although he is running unopposed, incumbent State Treasurer Marlo Oaks will also be present at the local gathering.

Geoff Cox recommends that Cache County delegates to the state convention make plans to attend the county gathering, since they need to determine each GOP candidate’s fitness for his or her office and their fidelity to Republican platform principles.

The Cache County Event Center is located at 490 South, 500 West at the county fairgrounds in Logan.
