Celebrating semi-pro soccer

A semi-professional team sanctioned by U.S. Soccer that competes in Belleville is hosting a benefit preseason party this Saturday at the Millstadt VFW.

Cost is $20 per person to attend Ehtar Fest, which runs from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and features BBQ, beverages and live music performed by The Trophy Mules, Hotel Party, Bog People and T.E.M.

Ehtar Belleville FC began play as a National Premier Soccer League expansion team last season.

The club’s name – it means swordsman or warrior – comes from Southern Illinois’ long held nickname as “Little Egypt.”

Ehtar Belleville FC serves as a stepping stone for competitive soccer players – some team members are from the metro east – with hopes of advancing to the professional ranks.

One of the players on this year’s roster is Waterloo native Brian Bement.

The NPSL is designated  as a Tier 1 league of U.S. Soccer and is affiliated with Major League Soccer.

Ehtar’s 2024 season opens with a friendly match known as “The Burgermeister Cup” against the Scott Air Force Base soccer squad at 5 p.m. May 4 at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville.

The NPSL opener for Ehtar is 7 p.m. Saturday, May 18 against Sunflower State FC at Althoff.
