READING, Pa. - A week ahead of the Pennsylvania Primary, Berks County Director of Election Services Anne Norton said things are going pretty smoothly.

"We've tested all the voting machines, the voting machines, the tabulators," said Norton.

Poll books and scan machines are also being tested, and poll workers are being trained.

"There's a lot of interest when it's a presidential year, so we are pretty well staffed," said Norton. "We're expecting the primary to be a lot less voter turnout than in November."

Pennsylvania is a "closed primary" state, so voters must be registered with a political party to vote.

"It's still important to vote, I mean the presidential contest isn't the only one on the ballot," said Norton.

Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt held a virtual update, talking about mail-in voting.

"With only one week until the primary, I strongly encourage those who have their mail ballot and haven't returned it to do so right away, in-person, to their county election office," said Schmidt.

Norton said there are three drop boxes in Berks County.

"We have the one here at the Services Center, we have one at the North Campus of the ag center in Leesport and then our new one is at the South Campus in Mohnton," said Norton.
