MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is dead, and a man is in custody after a shooting at a motel in Parkway Village Friday morning, according to Memphis Police.

Around 11:30 a.m., officers say they responded to a shooting call at the Extended Stay motel located at 4300 American Way. A woman was found suffering from a gunshot wound.

She was then taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.

Dewayne Carr, 38, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

According to an affidavit, Carr was a recent resident at the motel, but he was evicted for not paying. An employee at the motel told police that the woman killed in the shooting was the resident manager who evicted Carr.

Police tracked Carr down as he was walking away from the motel shortly after the shooting. Officers reportedly found a loaded pistol and ammunition on his person.

Police say detectives also found two additional rounds in his pocket during the search.

Police say Carr showed to have an active arrest warrant out of New Orleans, Louisiana. He was also found to have a felony conviction in Louisiana for unlawful transport of firearms. In 2011, he was sentenced to 57 months.

Memphis Police say surveillance video captured the shooting, but police have not released it. This is still an ongoing investigation.
