BREAKING: NWS preliminary survey indicates EF-2 tornado hit Port Arthur

The National Weather Service says the preliminary survey from its damage assessment team on site indicates an EF-2 tornado with wind speeds of about 120 mph heavily damaged Progressive Missionary Baptist Church on 13th Street in Port Arthur, and it also damaged homes in the 1900 block of Thomas Boulevard and the 1900 block of 11th. Other damage is reported on 12th, 13th and 14th Streets. The NWS says the preliminary estimate is the tornado traveled about 2.7 miles and was 300 years wide. There are no reports of any deaths or injuries. 6 shooter L.D. Ray was first on scene to capture video for us.

Port Arthur schools are closed today due to power outages. School resumes at the regular time Thursday.

Torrential rains have closed and flooded roads in Southeast Texas, leading to evacuations and calls for families to stay in their homes and stay off the roads.

TxDOT has reopened Highway 69 south of Warren after closing it earlier today due to flooding and road damage, according to Tyler County Sheriff Bryan Weatherford. Up to 14 inches of rain fell between Hillister and Warren. Highway 96 in Kirbyville is closed and other roads are flooded in Jasper and Tyler County. Roads are also flooded in Newton County. Jasper County Judge Mark Allen has issued a disaster declaration. Emergency crews have rescued several people from homes and vehicles in the Kirbyville area.

More than a foot of rain fell in several locations, causing flooding throughout the region. Kirbyville appears to have received the most rain where conditions have prompted the highway closure. However, many other roads are flooded as well.

Kirbyville, Buna, Warren and Colmesneil schools are closed today. Jasper and Newton schools are delayed two hours. All schools in Orange County are delayed two hours and several school other school districts are also delaying school by two hours. Lamar campuses are delayed two hours as well.

BISD will remain open but expect buses to run slowly.
