Motorized scooter rider killed in crash with cop car, authorities say

The Attorney General’s Office is investigating a multi-vehicle fatal crash Monday night involving an Ocean Township Police vehicle that killed a person riding a motorized scooter.

At about 9:08 p.m. on Monday night, an on-duty Ocean Township police officer was involved in a crash on Route 35 near Sunset Avenue, according to a preliminary investigation.

One man operating a motorized scooter was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. No other injuries were reported, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing and the Attorney General’s Office did not release further information.

According to a 2019 law, all deaths while interacting with law enforcement officers are investigated by the Attorney General’s Office and presented to a grand jury.
