IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) — According to Jeanerette officials, city parks will be closed down for the weekend as a criminal investigation leads law enforcement to believe retaliation will occur.

“We would be remised if we didn’t go forward and try to take some proactive measures,” Jeanerette Mayor Carol Bourgeois Jr. said.

Jeanerette police are investigating a recent shooting off of Church Street and Canal Street. The information they gathered gives them reason to believe a situation may occur at the J-Town Livin’ Park Party event scheduled for Sunday at King Joseph Park.

Jeanerette Police Chief Dusty Vallot said they are “almost certain that retaliation is set for Sunday at this point party with the investigations we’re doing and the intel we received.”

The police department, city officials and Iberia Parish Parks and Recreation came to the agreement of closing down all city parks for the weekend and canceling the event was for the betterment of the community.

“No life is worth one day. Sorry, that’s just not feasible,” Chief Vallot said.

The park party will be postponed until a later date. Parks will be reopened once law enforcement deem it safe.
