COLUMBUS, Kan. — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of a Columbus police lieutenant Wednesday morning for alleged child sex crimes.

KBI agents took David Justice, 55, into custody about 7:15 a.m. near his home in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Justice is facing charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, indecent solicitation of a child and promoting obscenity to a minor. He remained in custody later in the day at the Cherokee County Jail with his bond set at $25,000, the KBI said in a news release.

Justice has been on unpaid administrative leave since February 2023, when the allegations first surfaced. The KBI was asked to investigate the matter at that time by Columbus police and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department.

Several search warrants were executed in the ensuing investigation, the KBI release said. The statement did not provide any details regarding what was searched or what evidence may have been obtained by that means and referred to the investigation as ongoing.

Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME. Anonymous tips can be submitted at www.kbi.ks.gov/sar.
