Jens B Delicious retelling of Poe motives. Flanagan is the king of adaptation right now, see HILL HOUSE, or DOCTOR SLEEP. So, please, do Lovecraft next <3 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Tina K Mysterious, satisfyingly spooky, quirky, gory, strangely funny with long stretches of quiet (sometimes frantic) and delicious dialogue. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Peter J I wanted to love this show, as a big Mike Flanagan fan. Hill House, Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass are all masterpieces in their own right - beautiful and emotional storytelling. But this largely fell flat, and it was due to ridiculous and off-putting writing. Really the only solid performances come from Hamill, Gugino, and Bruce Greenwood, who is fantastic throughout it. Flanagan has to realize that throwing around the F word in every other sentence does not make for good writing; its juvenile, lazy, and unnecessary and just plain bad writing. You can get your point across in other ways. A few F words sprinkled throughout make it much more powerful. The children centered episodes are also very difficult to get behind, as none of them are given any redeemable qualities whatsoever - they are walking caricatures without any depth at all. Terrible to watch and listen to. Without Greenwood and Gugino, this entire house would collapse after the first episode. The Poe references were great and the imagery is fantastic. The ending is also very satisfying, which ultimately redeemed the entire show. But I must ask, what is Flanagan's obsession with putting people behind walls to kill them? It is the weirdest theme in some of his works. To me this is a one and done show; Midnight Mass and Haunting of Hill house deserve repeat viewings. This one, not so much. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Audience Member This was my favorite show of 2023. It’s a must-watch. It should have won so many awards. Carla Gugjno is simply amazing. She plays every part so perfectly. This is my favorite in the Flanniverse so far. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Ted B 3.5 stars; Gothic and gory horror.... buy not scary. Interesting expose of the corruption of BIG Pharma. I guess they accomplished achieving a Poe aura around the plot, but I probably missed it. I saw this more about the rise and fall/death of a prominent crooked family members strung out on their own drugs. The acting was very good, which added to the mystery/horror element. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Robin L More classic Flanagan that doesn’t disappoint. That said, the device used each episode gets more tired as the series goes on. Nina Li Coomes The Atlantic In Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher, the preservation of mood pays proper homage to the author’s words. The show’s social commentary, in turn, allows a retelling of an old story to resonate powerfully in our current moment. Oct 31, 2023 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine House of Usher also dares to bring Poe into the most contemporary of contexts... Oct 27, 2023 Full Review Leila Latif Guardian Mike Flanagan’s final Netflix offering is a spooky, grisly, sumptuously gothic treat Rated: 4/5 Oct 20, 2023 Full Review Pallavi Keswani The Hindu Flanagan pushes his own creative limits to experiment with fresh approaches. But as with most experiments, the person conducting it tends to tread carefully. Nonetheless, the show promises a unique watch, just ahead of Halloween. Jan 19, 2024 Full Review Aditya Mani Jha Firstpost For fans of horror and adjacent genres, The Fall of the House of Usher is a delight from beginning to end, proving once again Flanagan’s reputation as a bankable showrunner. Dec 20, 2023 Full Review Aglaia Berlutti Hipertextual For his Netflix farewell, Mike Flanagan transforms Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale into a sinister version of greed. However, between the horror and suspense, the result falls short of his previous adaptations. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: B- Dec 19, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
