Pete Dougherty chat: Packers fans wonder how Brian Gutekunst will approach the 2024 NFL draft

GREEN BAY − Green Bay Press-Gazette and PackersNews columnist Pete Dougherty responds to reader questions as the Green Bay Packers prepare for this month’s NFL draft.

Bill: The tackle from Georgia only has a half-dozen starts. Why would you risk a first-rounder on a guy with so little tape?

Pete Dougherty: You’re talking about Amarius Mims from Georgia, he had only eight career starts because of injury issues, including missing about half of last season because of an ankle injury that required surgery. You’re right, it would be a fairly big risk, not much of a track record to go on there. You’d do it because you’re enamored with the talent and traits, and if you really like your organization’s ability to develop offensive linemen and like the guy’s makeup, you might be more inclined to take the shot in the first round. It sounds like he’s probably going to go in the latter part of the first round, and the Packers pick No. 25, so he’s right in that wheelhouse. I too would be concerned about that, but you never know what any given scout or team thinks. It all comes down to what Gutekunst thinks of him relative to the other players available when he picks. My guess is he’d play it safer, go with someone with more of a track record.
