Brits planning to travel abroad this summer have been issued some helpful advice when it comes to packing their holiday essentials that could help cut down the cost of their travel.

Most UK airlines including Jet2, British Airways and TUI allow passengers to bring one piece of hand luggage on board for free, but there are strict rules on the maximum size and weight this luggage can be. With airlines increasingly cracking down on the amount of baggage you can bring on board for free, if you don't want to have to pay extra to check in a larger suitcase or bag it's important to be particularly savvy when you pack.

One travel expert has suggested a few ways you can make extra room in your hand luggage, in order to include all the holiday essentials you need while still fitting into the size requirements to bring your bag on the plane for free. Matthew Corrigan, CEO of Trtl Travel, explained that one of the easiest ways to be strategic with your packing involves considering what you can buy when you arrive at your destination, The Express reports.

"One of the main drawbacks of heading off on holiday with only a carry-on bag is significantly less space for your belongings," Matthew explained. "While this may seem like a deal-breaker, there are some simple ways to maximise the space in your hand luggage."

The expert advised: "Avoid packing items that will be provided by the accommodation - such as hair dryers, towels, and toiletries. Only bring items you know you'll use, and try to share phone chargers and other technology wherever possible."

While towels, bottles of shampoo and hairdryers might be something you use every day, the chances are your accommodation will provide these - you can always message your hotel or accommodation provider before you set off to make double-check. Toiletries can also be easily purchased at your destination.

If you're travelling to a colder destination that requires a coat or thick jumpers, Matthew advises against putting these into your hand luggage and instead suggests wearing as much as you can. If it gets too hot in the airport, you can always carry your coat and it won't be counted as a luggage item should you wish to pop it into the overhead locker once on board.

"It's best to wear large items such as jumpers and coats onto the plane rather than packing them. This frees up space and ensures you don't get cold during the flight," Matthew suggested.

Each airline has slightly different allowances when it comes to the size and weight your luggage can be in order to bring it on board for free, so it's important to check before you travel to avoid any last-minute fees at the airport.
