Passengers flying with budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet are being warned not to pack three specific items in their hand luggage, if they want to avoid risking some hefty fees.
Airlines' hand luggage rules can vary, but with budget carriers you'll often need to pay extra if you want to bring a second cabin bag or check-in your luggage. Trying to chance it by going over your luggage allowance could mean you end up having to pay a lot more - or in the best case scenario, having to unpack your bag in front of everyone as you try and take out items to get the bag's weight back down.
Matthew Corrigan, CEO of Trtl Travel, suggests that the best way to maximise your luggage allowance and avoid paying extra is to pack strategically, reports the Express. He warned: "Airlines such as Ryanair, British Airways, easyJet and Jet2 are cracking down on hand luggage passengers. One of the main drawbacks of heading off on holiday with only a carry-on bag is significantly less space for your belongings."
While this might seem like a deal-breaker, there are simple ways to maximise the space in your hand luggage, according to the expert. This involves leaving behind some everyday items which could be taking up a lot of space or adding weight.
Matthew advised: "Avoid packing items that will be provided by the accommodation - such as hairdryers, towels, and toiletries. Only bring items you know you'll use, and try to share phone chargers and other technology wherever possible."
While you might be tempted to pack everything but the kitchen sink for your next getaway, travel guru Matthew has some savvy tips to lighten your load. He suggests leaving behind the everyday essentials like towels, shampoo, and hairdryers, as most accommodations have got you covered.
Before you zip up your suitcase, give your hotel a ring to confirm they've got these necessities on hand. And if you're missing anything, remember you can always snap it up once you arrive at your destination. For those heading to chillier climes, don't stuff your coat or bulky knits into your carry-on. Matthew's hot tip? Wear them instead.
If you need extra layers, you can always drape your coat over your arm if you start to overheat. Plus, sporting your heaviest layers means more room in your bag and a cosy flight ahead. Matthew added: "It's best to wear large items such as jumpers and coats onto the plane rather than packing them. This frees up space and ensures you don't get cold during the flight."
It's not the only warning that's been issued for Ryanair passengers; holidaymakers have also been told to follow the airline's check-in rules or potentially risk being turned away at the airport. Ryanair explains on its website: "If you have purchased a check-in bag, you must check this in at the bag drop desk at the airport. If you bring your check-in bags to the boarding gate, you will have to pay a fee per bag, to place them in the aircraft hold. If you do not pay the gate bag fee you will not be able to board your flight."
