An incumbent slate of Newark Board of Education candidates backed by the mayor was well ahead of the six challengers in Tuesday’s election, with 95% of election districts reporting, according to preliminary results from the Essex County Clerk’s office.

As of Wednesday morning, with 165 of the 173 election districts reporting, all four members of the “Newark Schools Forward” slate backed by Mayor Ras J. Baraka had double the tallies of their closest competitors, according to the clerk’s online election results page. The lopsided numbers point to a sweep by the four incumbents in Tuesday’s race for three full, three-year terms, plus an unexpired term with one year remaining.
