MANCHESTER, Conn. (WTNH) — A Manchester middle school teacher is facing charges after police said he inappropriately touched and made comments to students.

Three students complained in February that Floyd Gray, a 58-year-old from Hartford, was inappropriate with them, according to Manchester police. Gray works at Illing Middle School.

He turned himself in on Tuesday. He has been charged with three counts of breach of peace and three counts of risk of injury to a minor.

According to an arrest report, Gray is accused- in part- of rubbing the victims’ shoulders and commenting on their appearance by calling their clothes “attractive.”

On Wednesday, News 8 obtained a statement from Manchester Public Schools Superintendent Matt Geary. He said police informed them of the teacher’s arrest this week.

The school was aware of the allegations when the students brought their concerns to the administration in February. Geary said they immediately notified the Department of Children and Family Services (DCF)- as well as police- and Gray was put on a leave of absence.

He said Gray remains “out on leave as a result of the ongoing investigation.”

“Incidents like these are unsettling and staff at Illing and throughout the district are always available to students who have concerns,” Geary said.

An arrest warrant available in court on Wednesday said that

the students said while working on their laptops in class, “Mr. Gray will come up behind them and put his hands on their shoulders, and rub them.”

During a closed-door meeting with school administration, Gray was read the accusations. The warrant goes on to say that “he was nodding his head up and down as if he was agreeing with them. Mr. Gray verbally admitted to putting his hands on the students shoulder and calling them attractive.”

The warrant also said an eighth grade student made a report that Gray touched her shoulders and breasts on multiple occasions last school year. No arrests were made in that case.

Outside of court, Gray’s attorney, Patrick Tomasiewicz, said Gray denies this conduct.

“Mr. Gray dedicated his life to teaching,” Tomasiewicz said. “I cannot believe this is occurring to him.”

He added that Gray has been a teacher at Illing Middle for 21 years and has three daughters, who were by his side at court Wednesday.

“I happen to believe him and I live by him,” Tomasiewicz said. “He is presumed to be innocent and this man is going to contest these charges.”

Gray will next appear in court on May 28.
