GREENWOOD, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Greenwood ISD is making big strides in 2024. Last week we told you that the school district will be moving to a four-day school week come August.

In other exciting news, the 2023 bond that was passed led to upgrades and millions in improvements and construction to campuses across the district. Superintendent Elliott is sharing the latest on those projects.

That nearly $286 million bond is providing employees, families, and students with a lot to look forward to.

“Greenwood is really unique because we do not have a city, so when you come out here at night we host all the stuff, so getting those pieces in place is going to be a great thing,” said Greenwood ISD Superintendent, Ariel Elliott.

A quick reminder, Proposition A totals $198.77 million, with a 3.5-cent tax impact. It includes a new elementary school for Kindergarten-Second grade, a new Intermediate School for Third-Fifth graders, and increased capacity in high school. Along with, a new secure entryway, new science labs, new cosmetology space, a new library, a larger cafeteria, and more parking.
The plan is for the district to also convert the South wing of Brooks Middle School from an intermediate school to a middle school. The district will also convert the elementary school into a Pre-K center, with career and technical labs, athletic locker room space, and district support services.

“We’ve met with the county and talked about roads and lights, and water so we’re working on all of that,” said Superintendent Elliott.

Different groups of architects are working on these sites right now…
As the two elementary school designs are already complete, the early stages of design for the high school have begun.

“We hoped to have the elementary campuses open in 2026. Then the high school is a little different because we are going to be making adjustments to the campus as we are in school so we’ll be doing it one piece at a time. I think all of it will be done by 2028 at the latest I hope.”

For Prop B, Superintendent Elliott said this is a multi-step process and will take some time.

“We’ve also worked with another group that’s working on the indoor facility which is a turf room essentially. That’s a separate project. We’re also working on a separate project for a gym and auditorium,” said Superintendent Elliott.

Now remember Proposition B costs $87 million, with a 1.5-cent tax impact.

It will include a new student event center with a 2,000-seat auditorium, dressing rooms for theater, a black box for theater practice, athletic locker rooms, a shared lobby, concessions, and new restrooms. It’s a multi-program facility with a large volume practice facility with community usage hours as well.

It all helps with recruiting and retention for students, their families, and even employees.

“The bond, especially people that have their young kids that wanna move here, the better your facilities are the better it is for recruiting there as well,” said Superintendent Elliott.
