LINCOLN — A 68-year-old Lincoln man accidentally shot himself in the hand early Wednesday, according to the Lincoln Police Department.

Police responded to a residence near 58th and J Streets around 5 a.m. on a report of an individual who had shot himself accidentally, Capt. Todd Kocian said.

The 68-year-old told officers that he had woken up from a bad dream and believed someone was breaking into his home, and when he reached for his handgun, he unexpectedly shot a round, police say.

He was taken to a local hospital to treat his injuries.

The man was cited for unlawful discharge of a firearm and released.
