New details on the officer involved shooting in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) -- New details are released in the deadly officer involved shooting that took place in Cedar Rapids on Saturday night.

Police were called to the 200 block of 31st Street NE where a male suspect called police asking they respond to his home. Police also received a second call to respond to a welfare check for the suspect at the location. 

The suspect was reported to have been making homicidal and suicidal statements and was armed with a weapon.

Police responded to the area and located the suspect and male bystander who had also requested assistance for the suspect's behavior. 

The suspect had the weapon in hand and police gave verbal commands for them to drop the weapon. The suspect was then hit by gunfire from three officers after they were seen raising the weapon in the direction of police.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The bystander was also hit by gunfire and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

No other injuries were reported in the incident. There's no known threat to the public related to the incident.

Cedar Rapids Police requested the help of the DCI Major Crime Unit to conduct the investigation.

The names of the suspect, bystander and officers involved are not being released at this time. 

All three officers have been placed on critical incident leave while the investigation is underway. Once it's finished, a report will be given to the Linn County Attorney for review.

No more information about the incident will be released at this time.
