OSCEOLA, Ark. (KAIT) - The Osceola School District recently approved a plan to implement four-day school weeks, which has sparked mixed reactions from parents.

While some parents are happy about the change, others are skeptical that the change can work.

“Personally, I don’t like it,” Gladys Richardson said, who added children could experience burnout due to the extra workload.

“You got homework you got to do and then you know after the done with the ball games and different things they’re tired,” she said.

Richardson is also worried the students may not have enough time to study and complete their tasks, which could harm their grades.

As an active grandparent, Richardson said going back to a traditional five-day school week would also address the childcare concerns.

“A lot of people can’t afford childcare, and the longer they’re having to stay in childcare at a daycare center or whatever, the more it’s going to cost parents,” she said.

Richardson also said she is worried about the children who do not have a secure support system and where they will be when they are out of school.

While she is not happy with the decision, Richardson acknowledged they will have to adjust to it in the best way possible, but hopes things will change.

“Give our kids back their summer,” she said.
