CONCORD — Authorities on Wednesday arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with a crash that left a 9-year-old girl dead and several family members injured Sunday in Concord.

The crash happened around 5:15 a.m. when a gray Mazda CX-9 ran off Interstate 680 at the Highway 242 divide.

The girl who died was publicly identified as Danna Hernandez Tapia of Tualatin, Ore.

Her 32-year-old mother, 13-year-old sister and two 17-year-old cousins all suffered major injuries and were hospitalized.

California Highway Patrol Officer Adam Lane said they are all expected to survive.

The man who was driving the Mazda, identified as Jesus Ivan Dorantes, fled from the scene, but was arrested Wednesday afternoon, according to the CHP. He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges including vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and child abuse.

The Mazda ended up on its roof after the crash, and several people who were not wearing seat belts were thrown from the SUV, Lane said. He added that the Mazda went through a dirt median that separates I-680 from Highway 242 and overturned more than once.

No other vehicles were involved. Due to the location of the crash, the CHP was able to reopen the freeway within 30 minutes.
