EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — An Edcouch man was sentenced to four decades behind bars after crashing into an ambulance, killing a medic and a patient in 2018.

Mitchell Garcia Trevino was found guilty April 5 on two counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and one count of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.

Trevino received sentences of 30 years and 20 years on the intoxication manslaughter charges, which will run concurrently. He received a 10-year sentence for the intoxication assault charge, which will run consecutively.

On Dec. 18, 2018, Trevino crashed into an ambulance, killing an medic and a patient who was being transported. The medic was identified as 32-year-old Felipe Huerta Jr., and the patient was identified as 68-year-old Delia Cortines.

A second medic, Andrea Rodriguez, was seriously injured in the crash.

According to previous ValleyCentral reports, the two were killed when the driver of a Ford F-250 drove into oncoming traffic, striking the ambulance head-on.

At a memorial in 2020, a family friend said that Huerta loved to give back to the community.

“Phil has always given back to the community,” Melinda Zamora said. “Phil was in the military. He had a Purple Heart from the time he was in the Marine Corps.”

After Trevino’s sentencing was announced, the RIP Felipe Huerta Jr. memorial page on Facebook urged the public not to drink and drive.

“This trial has many victims involved because of ONE man’s actions,” the page stated.
