Two N.J. teenagers arrested in shooting that wounded 3, prosecutor says

Authorities charged two teenagers Friday in a shooting that left three men wounded in Paterson, said police and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

A 16-year-old boy from Paterson and a 16-year-old boy from Clifton were charged with acts of juvenile delinquency that would constitute the crimes of first degree attempted murder, second degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, if they were adults, the prosecutor’s office said in a release.

The arrests stem from an early morning shooting on Sept. 3, 2023 in the area of Union Avenue and Jasper Street. Paterson police arrived at 2:40 a.m. and found a 28-year-old Elmwood Park man with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers were told about a second victim, a 33-year-old Paterson man, who also suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound, the prosecutor said.

Both victims were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson. Police learned that a third victim, a 29-year-old male Paterson resident, had been brought to St. Joseph’s in a private vehicle for treatment of gunshot wounds.

An investigation revealed the two juveniles were responsible for the shooting, the prosecutor’s office alleged.

The Prosecutor’s Office is seeking additional information about this incident. Anyone with information can call the tips line at 1-877-370-PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org or call the Paterson Police Shooting Investigation Unit at 973-321-1342.
