Terre Haute Casino opening soon: Here's what the city is doing to prepare for traffic

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Anticipation for the Terre Haute Casino's opening has been growing across Terre Haute.

The grand opening is on Friday. That means lots of visitors will make their way to Terre Haute this weekend.

Several nearby residents are concerned about the flow of traffic. Local businesses on SR-46 are bracing for the rush of visitors, along with preparing its employees for potential traffic jams.

"We have a lot of young drivers and young team members, so we just remind them, 'hey, be careful, give yourself a few extra minutes to work, be diligent, be prepared,'" said Matt Bilyeu, owner of Culvers in Terre Haute's east side.

The city also recognizes the safety and transportation concerns associated with the opening of the casino. Mayor Brandon Sakbun shared that the city has a plan.

"Traffic congestion. It affects folks moving to and from work, restaurants or schools where they are dropping their kids off. The other standpoint is that you never want to get stuck in traffic," said Sakbun.

Sakbun estimates there will be close to 60,000 to 70,000 visitors this upcoming weekend.

The city's engineering department has been in close conversation with state agencies about transportation and infrastructure improvements on SR- 46 and Margaret.

The city engineer says the plan is to route the traffic north to New Margaret to avoid congestion around the interstate exit.

In addition, INDOT is working to put permanent signs around SR-46.

"To help drive traffic on the east side. Whether they are going to the casino or just stopping off exit 11 or they live in Terre Haute, we're going to make sure some of the signage is there to drive some of that traffic," said Sakbun.

Sakbun also says to expect an increase in routine patrols.

Bilyeu has one piece of advice for drivers on SR-46 opening weekend.

"The east side continues to grow and develop. I think the community has done a good job of growing smart over here.. Be patient, have fun, understand everyone is working as hard as they can to take care of everybody and ensure the experience is good for everybody," said Bilyeu.
