Not to paraphrase a very popular Marvel movie, but you could say that FX‘s Shōgun is in the end game now. That is, after weeks of playing possum — and letting his most-trusted advisor commit seppuku to keep the ruse alive — the wily Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is about to pull the trigger on his dangerous “Crimson Sky” gambit…only it’s probably not the attack anyone saw coming. Instead of sending an army to Osaka, Toranaga is sending the loyal, formidable Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai). So what can Mariko accomplish that a whole army could not? Well, we’ll have to tune into Shōgun Episode 9 “Crimson Sky” to find out… But when does the next episode of Shōgun premiere on FX and Hulu??

Since Shōgun premiered on Hulu and FX in late February, it’s become something of a critically-acclaimed cultural phenomenon. The lavish new adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name follows opportunistic English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who finds himself bumbling upwards in feudal Japan thanks to pure luck. Blackthorne has arrived in Japan right as the Council of Regents have turned on the cunning Toranaga. The warlord latches onto Blackthorne as a tool in his complex game of chess against his fellow regents, using him for not only his knowledge of the Western world and cannon tactics, but as a stresser on the delicate political balance between the Christians and Buddhists in the realm.

At the end of last week’s Shōgun, Blackthorne had decidedly to give up on the seemingly defeated Toranaga, hedging his bets with the slippery Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano). The two sail to Osaka with their own strategy for survival, but have to bring Mariko with them.

So what’s going to happen next? What is Toranaga’s ultimate plan? How will Mariko play her part? What time does the next episode of Shōgun, Episode 9 “Crimson Sky,” come out on FX and Hulu?
