April 15, 1949: Although street lights along the portion of North Main Street that will be widened will not be fancy ornamental lights, as proposed in a petition circulated among property owners along the street, they will throw almost twice as much light as the present ones. Bloomington City Council members approved a recommendation to have the 12 present 2,500-lumen lights replaced with 12 4000-lumen lamps. The improvement will cost $1,200 and be paid for by the city. Ornamental lights will not be installed because an insufficient number of property owners signified that they wanted to pay for them.
