WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSYR-TV) — Micron will receive $6.1 billion in federal funding to support the construction of its $100 billion megafab campus in the Town of Clay, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer confirms to NewsChannel 9.

The deal is considered a preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) with the U.S. Department of Commerce, which outlines funding for Micron’s project in Central New York and a smaller expansion in its world headquarters of Boise, Idaho.

Micron’s campus will be built over the next 20 years, eventually bringing 50,000 jobs across four plants at White Pine Commerce Park in Clay. The company’s plans call for building cleanroom space that will cover about 2.4 million square feet, the size of almost 40 football fields.

Schumer said: “Without the federal incentives funded by the CHIPS and Science Law I Led to passage, including the Commerce CHIPS funding and the investment tax credit, Micron and other major chips projects in New York and around the country would not be happening at the transformational scale that is occurring.”

“To all those who have had their doubts, believe it, Micron is here, Micron is real,” said Schumer.

Governor Kathy Hochul praised the grant, saying in a statement given first to NewsChannel 9: “The largest private investment in American history is on its way to Central New York. New federal funding from President Biden’s CHIPS and Science Act will help lock in 50,000 jobs, a $100 billion investment, and millions of dollars in community benefits, along with aid from the Green CHIPS Act we passed here in New York. As the first governor from upstate New York in more than a century, I’m proud to have helped secure this transformative deal along with our federal partners. We’re going to revitalize our upstate economy — one microchip at a time.”
