The friend of a man hit and killed by a garbage truck is honoring his memory and remembering his impact on the community.
Burlington Police Department said a garbage truck was backing up Monday morning in the Pizza Ranch parking lot, hitting 34-year-old Jake Zappa of Waukesha. Zappa worked at the restaurant and was given the company's Community Impact Award in June 2022 for providing free meals for first responders after the Waukesha Christmas Parade attack in Nov. 2021.
Zappa was on the board of directors with Outskirts Theatre Company and helped select the productions they put on.
Founder of the group, Ryan Rehak, said Zappa also worked with Make-A-Wish using the theatre company to make a girl's dream to have a boat come true.
"He was part of this team that was doing the big grand ceremony gift part of it. He reached out and asked 'Would you bring actors that are sailors? And help us build a ship.' So we did that with him and it was so cool, so fulfilling and rewarding giving back so we started doing a lot of those events with him," said Rehak.
Outskirts is dedicating its upcoming performances of "La Cage Aux Folles" to Zappa.
