A section of Interstate 83 that shut down after an overnight triple-fatal crash in York County has reopened.

Three construction workers were fatally struck around 3:30 a.m. on I-83 south between the Fishing Creek and Lewisberry exits. Pennsylvania State Police said a 24-year-old man driving a box truck hit a construction vehicle, then traveled along the shoulder and hit the workers.

The workers were pronounced dead at the scene Wednesday morning. Their identities have not yet been released.

On Monday, PennDOT began a crack-sealing project on I-83 from the Maryland border to exit 40 toward Limekiln Road. Workers were scheduled to be on the highway each night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Rolling lane closures were expected because of the construction.

“Motorists should drive with caution and be alert for construction vehicles and workers,” PennDOT said in an April 10 press release.

The triple-fatal crash happened during National Work Zone Awareness Week, a week set aside for recognizing the importance of safe driving in work zones.

State police are investigating the crash. No charges have been filed as of Wednesday morning.

I-83 south reopened around 11:20 a.m. PennDOT said residual delays should be expected.
