One QB for the Rams to target in each round of the 2024 NFL draft

Matthew Stafford is firmly entrenched as the Los Angeles Rams’ starting quarterback for at least one or two more years, depending entirely on when he plans to retire from the NFL. Jimmy Garoppolo is stepping in as his backup, and Stetson Bennett is technically still on the roster as the No. 3 option after missing his rookie year while on the non-football illness list.

All of that is to say the Rams could be in the market for a quarterback in this year’s draft. Whether it’s in the first round or seventh, it’s possible Los Angeles will leave the draft with a rookie QB – potentially one capable of taking the reins from Stafford down the line.

Here are seven QB options for Los Angeles in the draft, one in each round.

Round 1: J.J. McCarthy, Michigan

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

In all likelihood, McCarthy isn’t going to be there at No. 19. But out of the top four quarterbacks, he’s the most likely to slip. If he does, the Rams might consider taking him as the heir to Stafford. He’s a quick processor and throws accurately to all levels of the field, which makes him a good fit in Sean McVay’s offense.

Again, it’s highly unlikely the Rams take him in Round 1, but never rule anything out.

Round 2: Michael Penix Jr., Washington

Jonathan Hui-USA TODAY Sports

It wouldn’t have been unreasonable to put Penix in the Round 1 slot, but I’d be much more comfortable taking him in the second rather than the first. With his injury concerns and some questions about his accuracy at the next level, selecting Penix in the second round at least mitigates a little bit of the risk. That being said, the Rams could do much worse when it comes to a succession plan at QB.

Round 3: Spencer Rattler, South Carolina

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Rattler is a fascinating prospect because he did have some maturity issues earlier in his college career, but he seems to have cleaned those up and become more NFL-ready off the field. He’s also slightly undersized for the position but he’s athletic and can extend plays with his legs. For a developmental prospect, he’d be a good target for Los Angeles, given its stability and leadership at the quarterback position already.

Round 4: Michael Pratt, Tulane

Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

Pratt showed good accuracy and anticipation at Tulane, which could get him drafted as early as Day 2. He doesn’t have a big arm or rare athleticism, but he puts the ball in the proper spots and knows how to throw his receivers open. While Pratt doesn’t necessarily have franchise quarterback traits, he’d be a good player to get in the building and work with for a year or two.

Round 5: Jordan Travis, Florida State

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Travis is only 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds with 9-inch hands, so he’s by no means a prototypical quarterback from a size standpoint. However, he is an elusive and dangerous runner, as evidenced by his seven rushing touchdowns in each of the last four seasons at FSU. Travis suffered a broken ankle in November and also had multiple shoulder injuries during his time with the Seminoles, so there are certainly concerns as he enters the NFL.

Round 6: Joe Milton III, Tennessee

Milton has quite possibly the strongest arm of anyone in the class and he’s also got the mobility teams love to see from a quarterback, but he doesn’t diagnose defenses well enough yet and doesn’t go through his reads the way NFL coaches will want him to. Again, with Stafford entrenched for another year or two, Milton could learn a lot sitting behind him before possibly getting a chance to start a few years down the line.

Round 7: Austin Reed, Western Kentucky

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

In the seventh round, you never expect to find a starting quarterback. Reed may not have the upside of being one, but he throws with anticipation and put up huge numbers in college – including 71 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions the last two years at Western Kentucky.
