Cement truck driver charged in death of baby
ANDERSON, S.C. (FOX Carolina/Gray News) - The driver of a cement truck involved in a South Carolina pileup that resulted in the death of an infant has been charged, the state’s highway patrol said.
Troopers said Creshaun Rainey was driving a cement truck too fast for the conditions when he crashed into the back of a car on U.S. Route 29 in Anderson County on April 5.
The impact caused a chain-reaction crash with 10 vehicles involved in the collision.
Rainey was on his phone at the time of the crash, according to troopers.
Three-month-old Jakai Govan, a passenger in the first car that was hit, was airlifted from the scene. He was properly restrained in a car seat, but the impact caused him to suffer a skull fracture.
The baby boy was later pronounced dead at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
The cement truck overturned in the crash, but Rainey wasn’t hurt.
He was charged with reckless homicide and two counts of assault and battery.
A judge set bond at $30,000.
