WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVO) — The education department said it has canceled student loans for 206K borrowers.

This is mostly because student borrowers have become eligible for cancelation after making 10 years of payments.

The Biden administration is implementing a new repayment plan that gives borrowers a faster route to forgiveness, but it is drawing criticism from Republicans.

“President is simply shifting the burden to those individuals that paid off their student loans or worked their way through school, or chose to take a career that did not require a four-year education,” said Wisconsin State Representative Bryan Steil.

“These people are public servants, we are fixing a broken system and we are proud of it,” said U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona.

In Illinois, the latest action cancels debt for more than 8.6K borrowers for a total of more than 100K students. A group of Republican-led states are suing with the argument that it is up to Congress not the President to forgive student debt.
