Lily Allen’s Unfiltered Thoughts on This Musician’s New Album Isn’t Sitting Right With the Internet

While celebrities are allowed to express their thoughts and opinions like everybody else, they must be aware that their words might quickly take over the internet. That’s especially the case when the target of critiques is none other than Beyoncé herself.

In a recent episode of her BBC Sounds podcast Miss Me?, fellow singer Lily Allen expressed her unfiltered thoughts on Beyoncé’s new country album, Cowboy Carter.

“I think it’s been quite calculated,” Allen said about the switch to country, per Us Weekly. “I feel like when Jay-Z got up at the Grammys, that was part of this campaign. It was before the album had come out or even been announced and she was wearing the blonde wig and a cowboy hat.”

And while Allen may be correct that Beyoncé and her husband might have been planning this transition for a while, isn’t that what PR campaigns are all about?

Allen continued her thoughts by talking about a specific track in the album, the re-recording of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” “It’s quite an interesting thing to do when you’re trying to tackle a new genre and you pick the biggest song in that genre,” Allen said. “I mean you do you, Beyoncé.”

The final dig at the “Halo” singer had to do with Beyoncé’s authenticity in the genre. “I’m here because I love country music and always have done,” Allen, who is currently recording an album in Nashville, said. “Not saying Beyoncé doesn’t, but I tell stories in my music and that’s what country music is.”

Unsurprisingly, Beyoncé’s fans were less than pleased with Allen’s comments. “I find it very weird how it’s always the most irrelevant people talking about the biggest artists… like are you looking for attention on ur own or from Beyoncé?” wrote one X user. “She’s using mother’s name for clicks, how desperate 😭,” echoed another.

Fans also pointed out how Parton and Paul McCartney (Beyoncé also gave her spin on “Blackbird” in the album) supported Cowboy Carter. “Dolly praised it so that’s what we care about!” wrote one user.

Looks like Allen won’t be winning this argument anytime soon!
