Santa Clarita Valley Softball Teams Fight On In Homestretch

High school softball programs across the Santa Clarita Valley have less than a month until the 2024 season wraps things up.

While some teams have dominated the league and others have yet to clinch a win, the desire to prevail victorious is the same—let’s take a look at where these programs stand.

Valencia (14-4, 7-0)

The defending champions currently top the Foothill League charts and hope to steal the title once again.

This year, the Vikings improved their state ranking from 139th to 20th.

Senior Abby Garcia leads Valencia with a batting average of 0.511, an on-base percentage of 0.593 and eight stolen bases.

Senior Jeanelle Bacat has 19 runs, 24 hits and six doubles to add to the stats list.

The Vikings have two college commits as well — Allyson Wolf and Hope Seper.

Wolf recently signed with Macalester College and Seper committed to the University of Pittsburgh.

Valencia is scheduled to play against Saugus at 3:15 p.m. next Tuesday.

West Ranch (9-7, 5-2)

Moving down to second place are the Wildcats, who seek to dethrone the Vikings this year.

Senior Savannah Gatewood leads her team in multiple areas, including a 0.549 BA, 0.569 OBP, four home runs, 38 hits, and five triples.

Senior Krista Viereck has also had nine doubles during the season so far.

To continue league play, West Ranch is expected to host Canyon next Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Saugus (10-7, 5-2)

In third place are the Centurions, with wins over all but the two teams at the top of the table.

The stats for Saugus are spread across the board — senior Avery Alcarez leads with a BA of 0.474 and an OBP of 0.545.

Senior Kaylie Stauffer has seven home runs, 21 hits and 29 runs batted in.

Sophomores Savanna Smith and Amelia Johnson have six stolen bases and 19 runs, respectively.

Lastly, freshman Riley Nelson has an earned run average of 2.22.

With their next game scheduled to be at home against Valencia next Tuesday at 3:15 p.m., the Centurions will need to claim victory to move up the ranks.

Hart (11-6, 3-4)

The Indians fell to Valencia last Thursday with a score of 9-2 to settle in fourth place.

Senior Alexis Lopez tops the team charts with a 0.480 BA, a 0.536 OBP and two stolen bases.

Freshman Nia Melendez has hit three home runs and also shares 17 runs with Nicole Specht.

Specht has had 25 hits, Lopez 24, and Melendez 22 so far.

Next, the Indians are scheduled to meet Golden Valley next Thursday for an away game at 3:15 p.m.

Golden Valley (6-12-1, 2-4)

The Grizzlies have only triumphed over Castaic and Hart in league play to contribute to their fifth place rank.

As of now, no player stats have been entered for Golden Valley.

They are expected to host Castaic next Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Canyon (6-9-1, 2-5)

In sixth place are the Cowboys after suffering a 0-7 loss to Saugus last Thursday.

For team leaders, junior Jessica Carr has an OBP of 0.519, 2.76 ERA and five doubles.

Sophomore Karina Montero has hit three home runs and freshman Maci Dunnagan has four stolen bases.

Lastly, senior Mia Reese has racked up ten runs, 21 hits and two triples.

The Cowboys’ next match is a non-league game against Garfield (7-3, 4-0) on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Castaic (3-10-1, 0-7)

Standing in last place in the Foothill League are the Coyotes, who have yet to clinch a league win since the program’s start in 2019.

Freshman Lulu Smith leads the Castaic team with a BA of 0.568, OBP of 0.587, three home runs, 25 hits, 14 doubles, three triples and a slugging percentage of 1.227.

Senior Bella Daye has contributed to the Coyotes’ stats with eight stolen bases.

Castaic is scheduled to face off against Golden Valley in an away game next Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Santa Clarita Christian School (3-6, 1-3)

Playing for the Heritage League are the SCCS Cardinals, who are currently ranked fourth in the league.

As of now, no player stats have been entered for the Cardinals.

Their next game is a non-league match against Frazier Mountain High School (0-5, 0-3) on April 15th at 3:15 p.m.

Trinity Classical Academy (0-7, 0-5)

Also competing in the Heritage League are the Trinity Classical Academy Knights, who are still on the hunt for a win this season.
